Maternal Aid for Mothers in Africa, known as MAMA, was founded in 2017 and aims to reach mothers in remote or marginalised communities in Kenya, providing maternity, birthing and child health information and support to mothers. MAMA’s focus is ‘health, wellness and sustainability’, so in addition to helping mothers, it also aims to develop health worker skills to ensure long-term support and expertise is available.
We began planning with MAMA in 2020. Despite delays due to COVID-19, we are now working together to establish a purpose-built maternity clinic, which will be sited in East Pokot, a rural area where access to maternity and child healthcare is limited and often requires a lengthy walk. The clinic design, which includes a consultation room, a maternity unit, multi-purpose space and children’s play area, has been finalised, with the construction materials chosen and shipped. We expect the clinic construction to be complete by the end of 2021: watch this space.
